The Sunday Times Oxford Literary Festival
March 25 - April 2 2006
We can’t deny that when we’re not being bar dwelling masters of style there’s nothing we love more than a good book, preferably whilst tucked up in bed wearing flannel pyjamas with a hot cup of cocoa by our sides. So we rather like the annual Oxford Literary Festival, in partnership with the Sunday Times, as it gives us the opportunity to indulge our bookworm sides.
With events taking place in some of Oxford’s most spectacular buildings this is not only an opportunity to enjoy literature and broaden your knowledge but a chance to celebrate the beauty of the city and its links to the arts and the world of academia. Each year the biggest names in books flock to the city to take part in this prestigious festival, promoting their work, meeting fans and presenting new ideas. This has provided thousands of visitors with an insight in to the world of the writer and undoubtedly fuelled many an imagination.
The expansive programme of events which take place over the week long festival includes talks, discussions and presentations not only from authors but from illustrators, poets, publishers and patrons of the arts and every year there are newcomers as well as returning visitors. Whether you’re an aspiring writer yourself, in love with lit or just want to meet an all time writing hero this is the place to come - mainstream authors sit alongside cult names and award winners and you might just come across the next big thing.
This year speakers include literature tour de force Wendy Holden, correspondent Kate Adie, historian Adam Hart-Davies (he of the silly tax ads), Charlie Higson (talking about his Young James Bond novels), new kid on the block Mark Haddon and old hand PD James. In addition you’ll be able to catch the wonderful Dr Robert Winston (hopefully doing something embarrassing in the name of science), Michael Rosen and Princess Michael of Kent. So you see, whatever your tastes and preferences in reading they’re catered for here.
