Scrubbing up for Summer
Feature
Summer is well on it’s way and whether you’ve planned to hit exotic beaches abroad or simply want to take advantage of the warmer weather at home, this is the time to start preparing your body for the big reveal.
After months covered up, under woollen sweaters, Lycra tights and heavy denim, our bodies may well have played second fiddle to our winter diet of potatoes and pasta, whilst constant exposure to central heating won’t have done our skin any good either. And before you know it, you’ll be donning strappy summer dresses, bare legs and sandals.
Now is the time to do a body check and start gearing yourself up, so here are some tips on how you can make the most of your skin this summer:
Water We’ve heard it all before, but don’t ever quite appreciate it: Water is a great detox for your body and skin. By rehydrating your skin you’ll improve elasticity, improving any wrinkles, and also allow the body to flush out toxins that lead to a dull, lifeless complexion.
Exfoliation Exfoliating the skin is a great way to get rid of all the old cells on your body; it also improves circulation that can aid in the reduction of cellulite. By exfoliating once a week you’ll find that skin is smoother and brighter, plus if you’re reaching for the tan bottle this is an imperative step in avoiding lizard type tanning patterns.
Diet There is a fine balance to appreciate in our diets. If we feel our bodies are craving something, then we should feed it appropriately – however I don’t think this applies to kilos of chocolates and cream cakes. What it does mean however is that during the winter our bodies require more carbohydrates, meaning a higher in take of potatoes, root vegetables and ‘comfort food’. As the seasons change, so should our diets and as we press on into summer it’s worth reassessing what’s on the menu. Along with increased water intake, try to introduce more fresh fruit, salads and fish.
Exercise For many of us, the idea of hitting the gym is not just unappealing, but also unattainable. High impact sports can also result in strain, injury and despite a good start, a fall out as soon as our routine is vaguely interrupted. The best way to improve your state of fitness for the long haul is to start slowly and realistically. Half an hours brisk walking per day can do wonders for your psychological and physical state, not only does the exercise do you good but also just being out in the fresh air is good for the body and soul.
Sun Protection Now we all want a bit of colour and that’s why many of us end up looking like a shiny lobster after a day in the sun. The key here is to protect your skin, ideally all year, certainly all summer. Regardless of whether you’re baking on the beach or simply out for a stroll around town, make sure you’re protected. Your tan will take longer to materialise, but it will also last longer, look nicer and protection will keep you looking younger for longer.
