Gig review: TUNDE, Lowry, Manchester, Jan 14 2007

review

After a 15 minute delay due to “technical problems”, the first solo tour from the Lighthouse Family’s former front man wasn’t getting off to the most promising of starts. However, this didn’t seem to deter the hundreds of fans packed into Manchester’s small but perfectly formed Lowry Theatre for a night of soulful and relaxed entertainment.

The show opened with ‘Question of Faith’ from the ‘Postcards from Heaven’” album and then swiftly moved on to other L.H.F. tracks, before furnishing us with material from his first self-titled solo album. As personal and heartfelt as many of the tracks clearly are, somehow these lack the vibrance and melodic qualities found in his earlier work. Halfway through this middle of the road performance the audible sound problems seemed to clear  as we were then treated to what was for many the main reason for coming - songs from the massive selling ‘Ocean Drive’, along with covers from Bill Withers and Prince ,plus the very promising ‘Letting Me Down Gently’.

This was never going to be a sold out arena tour as Tunde’s latest material obviously calls for a much more informal and personal environment. It may never be music for the masses but this talented vocalist clearly has no qualms about playing his older material and the final performance - title track  ‘Ocean drive’ was  definitely the most highly anticipated song of the evening.

All in all this was a pleasant well rounded performance from a seasoned professional who can proudly boast an impressive body of work, and for those of you familiar with the Lighthouse Family this new album may well be worth a listen.
