Local homes & property: Guide to Oxford

Best known for its university, Oxford has lots more going for it - not least that it is a one hour train trip to London, making it attractive to commuters who don't want to live in the capital. But that also means that property in Oxford is not cheap, though much less expensive than central London.

Students tend to live in East Oxford where there are mostly Edwardian and Victorian properties. There are also 1960's blocks of flats where you can find two bedroom apartments for £160,000 and upwards. Headington is the next neighbourhoods to the east and is correspondingly cheaper. Here, there are two-bedroom flats from around £140,000 and three-bedroom flats from £185,000.

Marston is favoured by families bordering as it does on countryside and the nearby village of Old Marston. Marston also has easy access to the M40 for London so it is also popular with commuters. Most of the housing is 1930s terraces with a smattering of semi-detached family homes. Prices vary considerably. Expect to pay anywhere from £120-250,000 for a two bedroom terraced home and from £150- £300,000 plus for a larger three or four bedroomed semi-detached house.

With its river views, Jericho has Oxford's most exclusive - and expensive - housing. Victorian and Edwardian properties predominate although there are also some 1930s apartment blocks. Two-bedroom flats start at a minimum £200,000, three-bedrooms go as high as £400,000. Family homes can fetch a cool £1 million.

North of Jericho is Summertown which has a similar mix of properties that are somewhat cheaper. Nearby, Grandpont is a leafy suburb where you can find three bedroom properties for £250,000 upwards and this is another popular neighbourhood for families.
